Meet Charlie Maurer

The return of Transatlantic Storytelling is officially underway as 16 Ball State students have been selected to participate in the second iteration of the award-winning project with Cardiff Met University in Cardiff, Wales.

The highlight of the project will be a 12-day cultural immersion trip to Wales in late February and early March 2024. While on the ground, students will collaborate with their peers in the Cardiff Met Sport Broadcast course to produce feature stories, live sporting events, studio shows and podcasts.

Charlie Maurer (Senior)

I’m interested in this project because of the opportunity to achieve so many different things. Not just personal aspirations, but team-oriented goals as well. This is a chance to continue a partnership that has been held strong for the past half decade. The opportunity to learn from our counterparts across the pond who share a unique perspective on the sports media world.

It’s the opportunity to produce some of the best stories at Cardiff Metropolitan University under the partnership of Transatlantic Storytelling. I am honored to be a part of this experience. I believe with my past participation and knowledge, I can help achieve our goals and bring value to the team.

My name is Charlie Maurer and I am a senior at Ball State University. I am from Carmel, Indiana and ever since I was 15 years old my goal in life has been to become a professional play-by-play broadcaster.

I got my start at the Carmel High School student radio station, where I quickly joined the sports department. By my first semester of my sophomore year, I received my first chance at being a broadcaster. It was a junior varsity girls’ basketball game and I still have the recording to this day. Every now and again I listen back to that first game, just to remind myself of where it all started.

Since that moment I have been obsessed with the sports media world and the play-by-play profession. From not only continuing my journey to becoming a professional broadcaster, but in so many other fields.

I have produced two different feature stories and am currently working on a long form feature documentary on the Ball State Football team. I have worked in five different positions on over 30 ESPN broadcasts, including all three “talent” positions, and have extensive experience with videography and post-production editing.

All these opportunities and experiences have been garnered over the last three and a half years at Ball State and in Sports Link.

I hope to gain the ability to connect and grow in the shoes of someone else’s life. Being able to open my perspective to a different culture and try my best to embody that while I’m there. This will hopefully lead to better storytelling, which is always the focus in Sports Link.

I hope to achieve, as well, the chance to help produce one of the largest broadcasts Sports Link has ever been a part of. A full day production of multiple different sports all going on at the same time at Cardiff Met University. This seems like a great opportunity to push the limits of our live event productions and learn different styles of sport production to help elevate our broadcasts. This is the opportunity to advance so many different skills and help continue the partnership of these two outstanding programs.
