Sam Gordon is the fastest man in Wales and sprinting towards the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo in the 100-meter dash and as member of the Great Britain relay team.
An alum of Cardiff Met, Gordon hopes to become the first Welsh runner to register a 100m sprint in less than 10 seconds. He currently holds the Welsh record at 10.08 seconds (with wind assistance).
“Becoming the fastest man in Wales’ history established me across Britain and showed the potential I have,” Gordon said. “My immediate goal is to make the Olympic team in 2021. I love anime and everything to do with Japan, so I’ve always said if I’m going to make any games, it has to be this one. I can’t imagine myself not making it. “
The charismatic athlete has been part of the Great Britain 4x100m relay team at the 2018 Anniversary Games in London, as well as the inaugural Athletics World Cup the same year.
Gordon regained the 60m senior title at the 2020 Welsh Indoor Championships, plus was a silver medalist earlier this year at the British Indoor Championships.
“The long-term goal is that I want a medal at every single major championship I go to. I want to go down as one of the best athletes ever in history. Being a world record holder is the dream”.
Gordon trains six days a week at the Cardiff Met campus and is coached by former Olympian Matt Elias. Elias won gold for Great Britain in the 4x400m relay at the 2002 European Championships.
Reaching the 100m finish line with a sub-10 seconds clocking is also a goal, which he believes could also change the Welsh Athletics landscape.
“Hopefully, if everything goes well, I can also sneak under that 10-second barrier,” Gordon said. “Not only would or be life-changing for me, but for Welsh Athletics in general. It would change everything because it’s not been done before. To accomplish that would be inspiring for all young athletes, but doors could open if someone achieves something of that magnitude.”
In a 63-minute interview, Gordon detailed his journey and revealed information he has never shared before for our documentary.
